So, the 'artwork' they found has nothing to do with my memory - we'll have to work around that.
When I was a kid my sister took me to a book store - it was the first time I'd ever been to one. I had always been an avid reader - and I read things like The Odessey. I loved fairy tales.
But, my favorite story was Peter Pan. Not the Disney version - the real story. It was beautiful and kinda dark and a little romantic.
I found my favorite story in a beautiful hard-bound book. It had green fabric cover and a green ribbon I could use to hold my place. The only artwork on the cover was a small square with a beautiful black & white drawing.
I cherished that book - and the Fairy Tale and Aesop's Fables that followed it (in the same style binding)...until they were stolen. I've yet to find their replacements.

Yup! There's so much more to the story than people realize... a darkness, as you said, and a bittersweet tone that reaches both sides - adult and child. Hooray for Peter Pan! :)
